Bonsoir everyone on this frequency 14.300, Ham Radio operators and Short Wave listeners
A year ago today, at 4:53PM an earthquake with a magnitude of 7+ devastated the Capital City Port-au-Prince, and its surrounding areas, and over 200000 people were killed, in a matter of 30 seconds. Perhaps the exact figure will never be known. Till today, over a million people remain homeless and are living under tents.
A year ago, at this time, we were lost and did not know where to turn to. Situation was grave. It did not take us long to realize that in this crisis, and without telephones/internet, we, as a ham, had to get on the air as soon as possible and the most reliable place to come on was 14.300 where there are so many dedicated operators around the clock. Our decision proved to be the right one.
The pressure was intense on all of us here on our tiny island. No news was coming out. Devastation was all over. We needed to find a way to let the outside world know the extent of our ordeal, and at the same time being careful of our choice of words. We had to give the news little by little, so the world would be prepared to face this reality. The skils the operators have displayed all along on 14.300 is a TRIBUTE to the Ham Radio Community and the Radio Club D’Haïti, and I personally, thank you for all you have done and are still doing. We understand there are stations that are monitoring but assisted at the time, and wish to thank them as well.
God Bless you all.
Jean-Robert Gaillard, HH2JR
